A large square shaped signet ring featuring a hand carved panther detail. Oxidised when silver.

Black panthers are a traditional tattoo staple and have been used across cultures and mythologies for thousands of years. Panthers have been used in countless art forms. A common style of panther on Western Traditional tattoo flash sheets in the crawling panther, thought to originate from a book written and illustrated by a Marie Schubert in 1934 titled 'Minute Myths and Legends'; and was first tattooed in the 1940's by a William Grimshaw.

In Western Traditional tattoo symbolism a panther head can be understood to represent strength, prowess and virility, and connectedness to nature, plus it just looks cool. It rose to popularity in the 50's and 60's following a spike in tattooing popularity after the second world war and as part of the civil rights movement, the black panthers.

Carved in wax first by Bethany, the illustrative design was carved by Calum Tattoo in his signature tattoo style. Bethany then casts each one from a mould into the desired recycled metal and finishes in her Bristol studio. Silver pieces are oxidised to bring out the detail.
